Diagnostic Tools

Windows and other operating systems come with a number of helpful tools to diagnose connectivity problems.

WINIPCFG.EXE

Use the Windows "Start" button, select "Run" and type the program name. Once the program starts, click on the "More Info" button.

The program reports your computer's currently assigned IP address, and the address of the gateway through which you are accessing the Internet. This information enables Technical Support to attempt to contact your PC.

The IP address of your DNS (domain name) server can be helpful, if you are unable to open a site by it's domain name.

PING.EXE

Run this program from the Command Line prompt to determine if your computer is able to reach another computer on the Internet.

C:\> ping 157.130.255.13

Pinging 157.130.255.13 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 157.130.255.13: bytes=32 time=250ms TTL=115
Reply from 157.130.255.13: bytes=32 time=240ms TTL=115
Reply from 157.130.255.13: bytes=32 time=220ms TTL=115

TRACERT.EXE

Run this program from the Command Line prompt, if PING fails to reach its destination.

TRACERT allows you to determine at which exact point on the Internet the network problem occurs.
